Earlier today running some errands I happened to pass through Ciudad Vieja. Approaching Plaza Independencia I noticed something afoot.
Apparently Keanu Reeves is in town doing some filming as a producer over the weekend. Prep work for the filming involves removing everything green from the Plaza Independencia per the local rags (archived). Well not everything green. Just the grass and every other plant smaller than the palms. Apparently they wanted to take out the palms too, but that was a step to far so they'll just drape the palms in chroma key green and edit them out.
There is substantial fuss being made over how Keanu and the production are paying millions for their use of what is essentially the national town square. What I wonder is why they are filming at Plaza Independencia if they seem to almost pointedly not want the landscaping? Keanu's been to Uruguay several times before and seems to like the place. Maybe this is a backdoor way for him to fund better grass? Is it harder to edit Palacio Salvo and the Artigas Masoleum into a composite shot than edit out everything else?
On the plus side the soil under the grass looks really good.
Bonus side view of the Eyesore Building.
